Twitter Customer Service Gets Results

Have you ever tried to call an airline to resolve an issue? How far did you get? (Southwest is excluded from this). What about tweeting the airline?

I booked a United Airlines flight through Copa (the Panamanian airline) to Panama City. Copa was selling the same flight for $300 cheaper than United, and I thought, what could happen? It's the same flight.

A few months later I find out from friends that all direct flights from Denver to Panama have been canceled. Odd, I think, since I hadn't heard anything from Copa or United.  I sign into Copa and see they still have me on my original flight. Yes, the one that no longer exists.

I pick up the phone to call Copa. Imagine for a moment the people working at the DMV, then multiply their apathy by 10, and you're somewhere close to the experience with Copa. I then call United, but they say they can't help me since I booked through Copa. I go back to Copa, and they of course say I have to talk to United. Round and round we go.

I then remember the sweet, sweet revenge of the guy who came up with the "United Breaks Guitars" song, and I decide to go public (I don't have that many followers, but public is public!).

.@copairlines I bought a flight from you that's on @United plane - it's now canceled & your reps refuse to refund/find me a new flight.*

I don't expect much, but to my surprise, United replies. I direct message United back andJJ at the other end tries to send me back to Copa. I say:

Copa keeps insisting under law it is United who provides passengers "protection" for their tickets.

I also mention that there are several other passengers on our flight in the same situation (there are six of us flying to Panama City that day  in my group). JJ becomes my knight (lady?) in shining armor and not only moves my booking to route through Houston, but does it for my friends, too. I offer to give JJ a raving review to United's customer service, but he/she never replies.

Thanks to the power of Twitter, I'll be spending Thanksgiving on Red Frog Beach on Isla Bastimentos in Bocas del Toro Panama with six of my closest amigos.

*(Quick Twitter tip: add a period or other punctuation in front of the handle you're mentioning and all their followers will see it. If you don't do this, just people following both of you will see it).
